QUEST: 1,000 Woodcuts Update

February 2005-  215 completed
<><><><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Hello dear friends!

After an absolutely wonderful 2004 it now appears we are well into 2005. I always wonder at how fast time seems to be going by but I'm told the rate is a pretty constant 60 seconds per minute.

The primary NEWS of the year is that I was the recipient of the Nevada Governor's Art Awards Visual Arts Commission, which is a long way of saying that the Nevada Arts Council commissioned me to make six works of art. These will be given as awards to the (all that up there again) recipients of the Art Awards. I was so excited and energized I got them all done!

Here they are with pictures of the process, inspiration diary and notes on hand-made paper and my wonderful papermaker.

Other exciting news for the year include a solo show later in August, but I am almost sure I can manage another newsletter before then. As always, you can peruse the latest works here:

Thoughts and ramblings:

Not to grow moss under my feet has always been a goal; I like to move forward...sometimes sideways, but always try to move. With that in mind, I will be trying for some new shows this year and perhaps I will even get in!

In any case, new for this year are more original blocks being cancelled as we speak, some exotic strange woods are on my bench carved and ready to print and a new batch of tiny boxwood pieces are awaiting a series that might just become my first official artist's book (something about seeds, perhaps?).

I plan on attending a couple of conferences this year, maybe I will become a bit more social if I force myself to socialize. Or maybe I will find that other artists also seek isolation but must come together to talk about all the wonders we concoct while we are alone.

The website is in dire need of updating and that other Maria that used to update it is going to tackle the task and renew the printmaking library, jot down a couple of more studio notes about working with hand-made paper and upload more photo albums.

I think this might be a year to regroup and forge a new and exciting course, perhaps a change is in the air regarding my art, maybe I will seek other venues or...who knows? Let's roll up the sleeves and see what happens!

(There is a late entry on my diary from last year; another exciting rain adventure...sigh:

Quote of the Day

"Let us, then, be up and doing.
With a heart for any fate;
Still achieving, still pursuing.
Learn to labor and to wait."
--Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
