Image: Deserts have forests too! Not those
lush Northwest pine forests nor the thick and impenetrable Southern swamp
forests, but forests nonetheless. Rugged Joshuas "drink" perhaps once or
twice a year, growing to more than 30 feet high and bearing a hard luscious
fruit that is unfit for human consumption. Through 120 degree F heat, the
Joshuas can't have leaves, in the true sense of the word, for to have leaves
in the desert is to expose precious surface to the sun rays and their relentless
evaporative power--to lose moisture is to die.
